Our Team
We bring different perspectives to the gym, but we’re united by a love for purposeful work, thoughtful design, and real connection.
Prof. Stephen Dobbins
Stephen Dobbins has been training and competing in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since 2009. After more than a decade of dedication to the sport, he received his black belt from Ademir Oliveira in 2021.
In 2022, Stephen founded Binding Arts Jiu Jitsu with the vision of creating more than just a place to train. He wanted to build a welcoming, family-friendly community filled with passionate people who support one another both on and off the mats.
Having trained at academies across the country and competed extensively throughout his career, Stephen brings a wealth of experience to his coaching. While he continues to love competition, his greatest passion is helping his students grow, challenge themselves, achieve their goals, and become the best versions of themselves through Jiu-Jitsu
Owner & Head Coach
Prof. Ben Sherman
Women's Program Head Coach & Adults CoachProf. Ben is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt and Coach at Binding Arts Jiu Jitsu. He began training in 2009, building his foundation under the guidance of Marcelo Garcia in New York City, where he earned his Blue and Purple belts. He has competed at every belt level and is proud to be the first Black Belt produced by Binding Arts. At the academy, Ben teaches the 6am No Gi Class and runs the Women’s Program. You can also find him mat side coaching our Kids Programs and at competitions helping bring home gold. He trains hard and loves that Jiu Jitsu never stops evolving. That passion drives his coaching every day.
Rudy began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2021 with an initial interest in grappling and self-defense. What started as a practical pursuit quickly grew into a deep appreciation for the discipline, focus, and problem-solving that Jiu-Jitsu demands both on and off the mats.
As a coach, Rudy enjoys helping students develop their own understanding of the art, viewing Jiu-Jitsu as both a physical practice and a strategic game. One of the most rewarding parts of coaching is watching students grow in confidence, sharpen their decision-making, and evolve their own unique styles alongside his own continued development in the sport.

I am a recently promoted blue belt with just over a year of training, having found my passion for BJJ I recently retired from a 14 year career as a wrestling coach. My background in wrestling provided me with a strong grappling foundation and a deep understanding of competition preparation, movement, and athleticism. Training at Binding Arts is a family affair, my wife and two daughters train along side me which has made this community especially meaningful to me.
Outside of jiu jitsu I am a a certified high school History and Special Education Teacher which has given me a strong understanding how individuals learn and grow. I recently began competing and have embraced the discipline and preparation that come with it. I genuinely love training alongside everyone in the gym and am committed to contributing to the Binding Arts community in any way I can.
